Malaysian National Detained in Saudi Arabia, Receives Consular Support

KUALA LUMPUR: Wisma Putra has confirmed the detention of a Malaysian citizen in Saudi Arabia, providing consular assistance to the individual. The Malaysian Foreign Ministry announced its efforts to ensure that the rights of the detained person are protected under local laws.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Foreign Ministry released a statement underscoring its commitment to working with relevant authorities to address the situation. The ministry emphasized its dedication to providing appropriate support while maintaining the principles of confidentiality and dignity for all Malaysians abroad. It urged media outlets to respect the privacy of the individual and their family, stressing that such sensitive matters should not be subjected to speculation.

Meanwhile, sources have revealed that a popular Malaysian comedian, arrested in Jeddah last October for drug possession, is currently serving a six-month jail term in Saudi Arabia. The sentence was reportedly handed down during a trial in November, with the comedian expected to complete the jail term by April. There is a possibility for an early release based on good behavior.

Earlier reports from media outlets indicated that the Malaysian Embassy in Riyadh had confirmed the detention in Jeddah related to suspected ganja possession but had not disclosed any identities.
