Malaysia Urged to Develop Quantum Technology Capabilities

Accra:Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang has emphasized the importance of building the country's capability in quantum technology, particularly in talent development, research and development (R&D), and infrastructure, to prepare for future strategic technological advancements.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chang stated that despite quantum technology not being widely used yet, building capability in this area requires years. He highlighted the necessity for scientists, engineers, researchers, software developers, and industry players to acquire knowledge early, as technology evolves rapidly but talent development takes time.

Quantum technology leverages the principles of quantum physics to create new methods in computing, sensing, and communication. Chang noted its potential to address complex issues in areas such as molecular simulation, materials discovery, system optimization, drug development, and security and cryptography research. However, he acknowledged that the technology's true potential relies on technological progress and practical application.

Chang further mentioned that while Malaysia may not need to independently develop all technologies or follow every trend, it must be capable of understanding, evaluating, adapting, and developing technologies vital to the nation. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has identified quantum technology as a strategic focus area for 2026.

Discussions are also underway regarding the establishment of the National Quantum and Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence (NQAIC), which would concentrate on local talent development, R&D, infrastructure, and exploring relevant use cases.
