Malaysia to Outline Response to US Tariffs at Upcoming NGCC Meeting

Kuala Lumpur: The government will announce its follow-up actions regarding the tariffs imposed by the United States on Malaysia at the National Geo-economic Action Centre (NGCC) meeting next Monday. This development was confirmed by the MADANI government’s spokesman, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, following a Cabinet discussion on the matter.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, any decision on Malaysia’s response will also depend on the outcomes of the Special Meeting of ASEAN Economic Ministers scheduled for Thursday, as well as discussions involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and several ASEAN leaders. “On Monday, we will detail this matter before we request that a delegation for diplomatic purposes and trade discussions be sent to Washington,” stated Fahmi at a press conference held after the Cabinet meeting.

Fahmi mentioned that the date for dispatching the delegation is being arranged. This week, the government, through the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), is engaging with industry stakeholders to gather feedback. This feedback will be compiled into an impact study to be presented at the NGCC meeting on Monday.

The tariffs in question were part of a series of reciprocal tariffs announced by President Donald Trump on April 2, affecting imports from around 90 countries, including Malaysia. Malaysia is subject to a 24 percent tariff, alongside other ASEAN Indo-China region member states that have been significantly impacted by these tariffs.

Despite the tariffs, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim assured that Malaysia’s economy remains resilient and is unlikely to slip into a recession. He also emphasized that Malaysia will not impose retaliatory tariffs against the United States.
