Shanghai:Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent three-day visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou, China, marks a significant step in enhancing Malaysia-China strategic relations across various sectors.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the visit, conducted at the invitation of the Chinese government, has opened up new opportunities for Malaysia to expand investments and export markets, particularly in high-impact sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, robotics, electric vehicles, and biotechnology. The potential investment from meetings with 26 Chinese companies is valued at RM28.6 billion, with significant contributions from companies like AgiBot Innovation, ZTE Corporation, Alibaba Group, Geely Automobile Holdings, and Huawei Technologies.
The visit also resulted in a potential export agreement to China worth RM8.2 billion over the next one to three years. Anwar emphasized the strong Malaysia-China relationship, highlighting mutual trust and cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic ties. This partnership extends to areas such as connectivity, digital economy, and talent development.
During his keynote address at the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 plenary session, Anwar underscored the importance of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Malaysia's industrial policy. He also highlighted Malaysia's participation in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, which offers a platform for exploring new technologies and artificial intelligence applications.
The bilateral discussions between Anwar and China Premier Li Qiang were characterized by mutual trust and addressed issues like supply chains and infrastructure projects. They also discussed the extension of the East Coast Rail Link project in Malaysia and concerns over micro, small, and medium enterprises' market interests.
This visit reinforces China's status as Malaysia's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching US$113.82 billion for January to August this year. The MADANI Diplomacy approach and the close relationship between Anwar and Li Qiang place Malaysia in a strong position to benefit economically and redefine the cooperation landscape between the two countries.
