Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia is committed to enhancing its relationship with China across multiple sectors, including economy, trade, and cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. The statement comes as Malaysia aims to leverage its comprehensive strategic partnership with China, reflecting mutual trust and longstanding collaboration between the two nations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting China’s role as both a close ally and a vital partner. “When we met in China, President Xi Jinping showcased a leadership style focused on growth, investment, and economic advancement,” Anwar remarked before a bilateral meeting with Xi at the Seri Perdana Complex. Xi’s delegation was received warmly, with cultural performances by the National Academy of the Arts, Heritage and Culture (ASWARA) setting the stage before a closed-door meeting.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, along with several key ministers, including Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. Anwar praised Xi’s vision for shared prosperity and civilisational progress, acknowledging the rarity of such ideals in global leadership.
Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to collaboration in various areas, highlighting the focus on AI and technological initiatives. He expressed gratitude for Xi’s leadership, describing him as “a true friend” to Malaysia.
Xi’s visit marks his second official trip to Malaysia in twelve years and underscores the enduring diplomatic ties established on May 31, 1974. Celebrating their 50th anniversary last year, Malaysia and China have maintained a strong trading relationship, with China being Malaysia’s largest trading partner since 2009. In 2024, bilateral trade was valued at RM484.12 billion, making up 16.8% of Malaysia’s total global trade.
