Malaysia Strengthens ASEAN Economic Integration Under PM Anwar’s Leadership

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia is actively working to upgrade existing trade agreements with ASEAN member states and dialogue partners, reinforcing its commitment to a more integrated and resilient regional economy, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar highlighted ASEAN’s role in providing a solid foundation that has guided member nations through various disputes and crises, including issues of sovereignty, pandemics, and climate disasters. He emphasized that ASEAN has been instrumental in anchoring economic integration through initiatives like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the future Digital Economic Framework Agreement. Anwar urged for a collective strengthening of ASEAN’s core principles and potential.

As Malaysia serves as the ASEAN chair, Anwar stated that the country must not only reflect ASEAN’s values but also aim to shape them. He stressed the importance of confronting regional challenges, renewing commitments to shared responsibilities, and enhancing cooperation beyond mere rhetoric. Anwar emphasized the necessity of preparing for global challenges by enhancing regional integration and developing additional economic ties, particularly through digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and energy transition.

Addressing concerns over rising protectionism, Anwar underscored the fundamental role of trade in regional security. He noted that when trade weakens, divisions emerge, highlighting the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit as a testament to ASEAN’s ability to harness economic synergies and foster collaboration.

Anwar discussed the conclusion of the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) as a pivotal step towards unlocking the potential of the regional digital economy, which will create new opportunities for local businesses to expand their reach. With the global economy shifting towards sustainability, Anwar emphasized ASEAN’s need to quickly adapt and seize emerging green opportunities and partnerships.

The Prime Minister underscored efforts in energy transition and sustainable practices, including investment guidelines and the development of the ASEAN Power Grid. Beyond economic value, Anwar highlighted the urgency of sustainable development due to the severe impacts of climate change on livelihoods, advocating for a greener and more resilient ASEAN.
