Malaysia Sets Ambitious Five Gold Medal Target for Glasgow 2026

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian contingent has set a target of winning five gold medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 2.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Head of the Malaysian Contingent (CDM) to Glasgow 2026, Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz announced that the national contingent is also aiming for two silver medals and four bronze medals. Awalan explained that this target was established after assessing the preparations and potential of the athletes who will represent Malaysia in Scotland.

"The training camp for the athletes who will compete in Glasgow has been underway and we have made a decision on the contingent's target, which we call the 5-2-4 target, which is five gold medals, two silver medals, and four bronze medals this time," Awalan stated. He added that although Malaysia lost four gold medals from the previous Birmingham 2022 Games, the target remains ambitious with hopes of securing medals in different events.

Speaking at a press conference after the Jalur Gemilang Handover Ceremony to the Malaysian Contingent at Casa 4, National Sports Council (MSN), Bukit Jalil, Awalan chose not to identify specific sports or athletes expected to win gold. However, he acknowledged that weightlifting, track cycling, field bowling, judo, powerlifting, and para-athletes are among the disciplines with medal potential.

Awalan emphasized that while each sport has individual targets, the overall achievement should be viewed as a collective effort rather than focusing solely on individual athletes or events. A total of 59 athletes, including national para-athletes, will compete in eight of the 10 sports at Glasgow 2026, such as swimming, track cycling, athletics, weightlifting, and field bowling. Additionally, six para-sports will be contested in an integrated manner.

Malaysia's previous performance at the Birmingham 2022 Games resulted in seven gold medals, eight silver medals, and eight bronze medals, with four of the golds from sports not featured in the upcoming Games. Earlier, during the Jalur Gemilang Handover Ceremony, Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari officiated the event, honoring national long jump champion Datuk Abdul Latif Romly as the national contingent's Jalur Gemilang bearer.

The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol, Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, Paralympic Council of Malaysia (MPM) president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin, and MSN director-general Jefri Ngadirin.
