Malaysia Proposes World TVET Council with China as Permanent Host

Tianjin:Malaysia has proposed the establishment of a World Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council, designating China as its permanent host. This initiative aims to bolster international collaboration in skills and workforce development.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the council would function as a global platform for cooperation in developing skills, technology, and workforce advancements. It is intended to convene annually, uniting nations, industries, and institutions to craft a shared global agenda for the future of skills and workforce development.

In his keynote address at the World Vocational and Technical Education Development Conference 2026 (WVTEDC 2026) held at the Tianjin Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Centre, Ahmad Zahid emphasized that the proposed council would support international efforts to enhance training standards and cooperation while respecting national priorities. Malaysia also welcomes the proposed Framework of World Vocational and Technical Education Standards, known as the Beijing Agreement, which aims to improve training quality and international collaboration.

Ahmad Zahid highlighted that the Malaysia-China cooperation in TVET exemplifies how diplomatic relations can lead to tangible opportunities, especially for young Malaysians seeking skills and improved career prospects. Malaysia's TVET agenda is coordinated across 12 ministries and involves 1,398 institutions nationwide.

Through the Hi-TVET initiative, Malaysia is directing technical education towards high-tech fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and semiconductors to prepare its workforce for higher-value jobs. Ahmad Zahid also noted that international partnerships, industry participation, and enhanced coordination are crucial to readying the next generation for evolving global economic demands.
