Malaysia Prioritizes Online Child Protection with 16 Strategic Initiatives

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has underscored its commitment to safeguarding children in the digital realm by implementing 141 actions under 16 strategic priorities as part of the National Child Policy and Action Plan for 2026-2030. This initiative aims to bolster child protection against online threats.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, emphasized that the newly launched action plan provides a comprehensive approach to restoring and enhancing children’s rights. The focus is on creating a safe, inclusive, and resilient environment, particularly for children at risk.

Nancy highlighted that while technological advancements present numerous opportunities, they also pose significant risks such as cyberbullying, exploitation, online predators, and emotional threats to children. She pointed out that digital challenges transcend national boundaries, necessitating collaboration, sharing of best practices, and the development of a secure digital ecosystem across the region.

In her statement during the ASEAN ICT Forum 2025 on child online protection, Nancy stressed the importance of coordinated efforts involving families, teachers, communities, NGOs, and the private sector to ensure effective child protection. She also noted the lack of awareness among many parents and teachers about the online risks that can endanger children’s safety and well-being.

Addressing the increase in online sexual exploitation cases, Nancy explained that the trend is driven by heightened awareness and the emergence of new spaces exploited by predators. She emphasized that young people aged 15 to 24 are particularly vulnerable, especially those not engaged in education, training, or employment.

Nancy concluded by stating that empowering children is crucial-not only for their protection but also to ensure they comprehend digital developments and make safe decisions. The ongoing two-day forum aims to enhance stakeholder understanding and ensure the new policies remain relevant and effective.
