Malaysia Pledges Enhanced Cooperation in BIMP-EAGA Initiative

Cebu: Malaysia is committed to strengthening regional cooperation through the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) to narrow development gaps and expand trade, investment, and food security for the wellbeing of the people.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized BIMP-EAGA's role as a strategic platform during the BIMP-EAGA Special Summit in Cebu, the Philippines. Anwar highlighted that the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 must be driven by a spirit of togetherness and sustainable governance, ensuring that remote and underdeveloped regions are not excluded from the development mainstream.

Anwar noted that as the world contends with challenges like energy supply crises, climate change, and global economic uncertainties, the region must adopt a more integrated and bold approach. Malaysia supports strengthening cross-border energy connectivity and investments in renewable energy, such as solar and mini-grid systems, to ensure fair and inclusive development benefits for all communities, including those in rural areas.

BIMP-EAGA was established in 1994 to accelerate inclusive economic growth, development, and prosperity in its member countries' less developed areas. Anwar remarked that the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 is more than just a policy document; it reflects a shared determination to build a resilient, competitive, and people-centered region.

Anwar also expressed that with the ASEAN spirit thriving, Malaysia will continue to support a development agenda that upholds human dignity, empowers local communities, and fosters a more prosperous future for generations to come.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., serving as ASEAN Chair this year, noted that summit discussions highlighted key programmes and projects significantly impacting local communities by creating jobs, enhancing connectivity, and expanding opportunities, especially in subregional growth areas. Marcos stated that the summit renewed the collective resolve to translate vision into action and planning into lasting impact.
