Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia must look at developing homegrown artificial intelligence (AI) champions within the semiconductor industry and establish a robust local AI ecosystem. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that AI adoption would not only enhance operational efficiency for semiconductor industry players but also strengthen Malaysia’s position as a global leader in the sector.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gobind emphasized the necessity for Malaysian semiconductor players to take the lead in AI-driven innovation. He highlighted the importance of not just adopting AI technologies but also creating them, in order to become a global AI-driven semiconductor hub. Gobind conveyed this message to reporters following the launch of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association AI Nexus (MAIN).
Gobind underscored the need for collaboration among semiconductor industry players, AI developers, research institutions, and policymakers, noting that success in this field requires a collective effort. He further mentioned the Malaysian government’s commitment to supporting businesses in their digital transformation journey. In December last year, the government established the National AI Office (NAIO) as a central authority to drive Malaysia’s AI agenda.
The establishment of NAIO aims to provide essential support, resources, and guidance to help the semiconductor industry harness AI effectively. Gobind also pointed out that the launch of MAIN is a significant milestone in Malaysia’s semiconductor and AI journey. MAIN will serve as a collaborative platform for semiconductor manufacturers, design companies, and ecosystem players to integrate AI into their operations and research efforts.
He added that through Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the digital ministry will facilitate the global expansion of MAIN component companies via MDEC’s Gateway, Amplify, Invest and Nurture (GAIN) programme. This initiative aims to open doors to new markets such as Brazil and India. The ministry will also support proof-of-concept and pilot projects, locally and globally, through the Global Testbed initiative, and strengthen MAIN by introducing cross-sector AI companies and capabilities, further enhancing Malaysia’s AI-driven semiconductor ecosystem.
