Kuala Lampur:Malaysia would require a minimum five-year business plan that addresses the commercial, promotional, and logistical aspects of hosting Formula One if it intends to make a permanent return to the championship.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that the possibility of Malaysia returning to the F1 calendar remains, but emphasized the necessity for strategic planning. He acknowledged Malaysia’s strong motorsport foundation and improvements made to the Sepang International Circuit, but highlighted the importance of a long-term business plan for a successful bid.
Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, president of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia, expressed confidence in Sepang International Circuit's ability to host F1 again, citing its experience in organizing the event. Ben Sulayem also noted that the plan should consider the financial, promotional, and logistical aspects of hosting F1, ensuring it aligns with Malaysia’s economic and tourism policies.
Ben Sulayem pointed out the need for geographical balance on the F1 calendar, mentioning existing races in the Asia-Pacific region such as Australia, China, Singapore, and Japan. He suggested that while the championship could expand to 25 races, the FIA favors adding more teams rather than increasing the number of races.
He also advocated for expanding Malaysia's motorsport ambitions beyond F1 to include more accessible forms like karting and rallying, praising the strong fan base and enthusiasm for motorsports in Malaysia.
Reflecting on the Bahrain Grand Prix held in Sepang, Ben Sulayem praised the cooperation between Malaysian and Bahraini personnel, highlighting the event's successful organization and the revival of local experience in marshalling and event management. He stressed the importance of finding solutions to organizational issues, such as traffic management, rather than assigning blame.
