Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia must balance its close ties with the United States and other nations while fulfilling its responsibility as ASEAN Chair to drive regional growth. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted this dual focus as a critical aspect of his administration’s foreign policy and economic strategy.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized that the role of ASEAN Chair presents an opportunity for the Malaysian government to accelerate efforts to restructure the economy, build a stronger foundation, and enhance resilience and competitiveness in an increasingly uncertain global landscape. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of maintaining a robust export position to the United States as part of this strategy.
“This evening, I chaired the National Geoeconomic Command Centre (NGCC) meeting to discuss strategies to strengthen Malaysia’s export position to the United States,” Anwar stated in a Facebook post. He noted that the meeting was a continuation of last
week’s discussions between Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry and the US Secretary of Trade and Trade Representative, marking a key step in ensuring Malaysia’s voice is heard amid a more challenging global trade environment.
For the record, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz had met with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer last week to address trade tariff issues. The discussions aimed at fortifying Malaysia’s trade relations with the US, which is a significant trading partner, while also navigating the complexities of global economic shifts.
