Malaysia Moves Closer To MLFF With Enhanced RFID Technology

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia is moving closer to a future Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system with the introduction of Enhanced RFID technology designed to support a more seamless, reliable, and secure barrier-free tolling experience.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Praba Sangarajoo stated that its locally developed Titan Flow Technology, which combines RFID, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), was designed to support the country's future mobility and tolling needs. He mentioned that the technology was developed specifically to address Malaysia's local traffic conditions, driving behaviours, and tropical weather challenges, underscoring Touch 'n Go's commitment to enhancing everyday travel and supporting future mobility infrastructure.

Praba highlighted the focus on creating experiences that are seamless, reliable, and secure while maintaining the accuracy and accountability required by highway operators. Titan Flow integrates multiple technologies that work together to deliver that experience, achieving a 99.98 per cent detection accuracy rate under real-world driving and weather conditions through its multi-layered technology architecture.

He emphasized that RFID serves as the primary detection technology due to its ability to provide a dependable detection layer that is less susceptible to environmental factors such as heavy rain, glare, and fluctuating visibility conditions. RFID also incorporates encryption and authentication mechanisms designed to safeguard transaction data and help prevent the cloning or misuse of RFID tags, further strengthening the security and integrity of the tolling ecosystem.

Praba noted that Malaysia would need to achieve a significantly higher level of RFID registration before MLFF could be fully implemented, with more than 85 per cent of road users needing to be registered under the system. Currently, Touch 'n Go has about 4.7 million registered RFID users, indicating that wider adoption is necessary for a successful transition to barrier-free tolling.

The technology was demonstrated during a live media drive-through at the Ampang Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) Dato Keramat toll plaza, where members of the media experienced the new Enhanced RFID lane first-hand using vehicles provided by GWM Malaysia. Marked by a distinctive gold star symbol, the Enhanced RFID lane incorporates key components of Titan Flow Technology, primarily RFID, ANPR, and AI/ML, enabling faster passage through tolling points.

Touch 'n Go reported that its SOS Balance feature on TNG eWallet has enabled approximately 36 million uninterrupted journeys since its launch by providing users a grace period to reload and settle payments, helping motorists avoid being stranded at toll plazas due to insufficient balance.

Meanwhile, GWM Malaysia Managing Director Cui Anqi expressed that the collaboration reflected a shared commitment to making everyday mobility smarter, more connected, and seamless for Malaysians.
