Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) has accepted the apology issued by three Era FM radio presenters over a contentious video mocking the Thaipusam kavadi ritual. MHS president T. Ganesan highlighted the necessity for media personalities and content creators to exhibit heightened awareness and sensitivity when discussing religious and cultural topics. He stressed the importance of maintaining responsible and respectful communication in the public sphere to preserve harmony in Malaysia’s multicultural society.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ganesan remarked that incidents like these should not be taken lightly, as they threaten the mutual respect foundational to Malaysia’s diverse community. He emphasized that the incident should serve as a reminder to all Malaysians about the significance of respecting all religions and cultures. While accepting the apology, Ganesan noted that an apology does not exempt individuals from the repercussions of their actions, underscoring the need for accountability in situations where harm is caused.
The video in question was deemed deeply offensive by the Hindu community, leading to widespread criticism and multiple police reports. Although the radio presenters have apologised, MHS acknowledged that investigations are still ongoing, with authorities addressing the matter under relevant legal frameworks. MHS has urged authorities to take suitable actions to prevent such incidents from recurring.
The three radio presenters issued their apologies at the Batu Caves temple complex, acknowledging the offense caused to racial sensitivities. On March 4, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was instructed by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the viral video featuring the presenters mocking a religious ceremony.
Additionally, MCMC has issued a notice of intent to suspend the licence of Era FM’s operator, granting them 30 days to respond before any final decision is reached. Astro Audio has also issued a public apology, suspending the three radio hosts along with two other staff members involved.
