Tokyo: Malaysia has shared its experience and direction in implementing dual 5G networks with countries in the Asia Pacific region through its participation in the Asia Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is leading the country’s delegation to APT-MM for the first time, highlighted the nation’s focus on online security issues, which are a challenge for many countries, along with the National Digital Network (JENDELA) infrastructure programme.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi emphasized the importance of regulatory bodies from APT member countries focusing on online supervision and security, including issues like online gambling and cyber fraud. He proposed the need for annual meetings of senior officers and workshops for Asia Pacific countries to share experiences and solutions.
The meeting also included a series of bilateral meetings with counterparts from Asia Pacific countries and international organizations responsible for the telecommunications industry. Fahmi held discussions with delegations from Japan, Indonesia, Fiji, China, Iran, Australia, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the GSM Association (GSMA).
Fahmi noted the significance of examining legal aspects and efforts in regulating online safety, as practiced by countries like Australia. He expressed the intention for Malaysian agencies such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to study Australia’s approach to online safety.
Malaysia also expressed its intention to continue its membership as a council member in the ITU for the 2027-2030 session, seeking support from its bilateral partners.
During the APT-MM 2025, the ‘Tokyo Statement 2025’ was launched, highlighting six priorities: digital connectivity, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, trust and security, digital inclusion and capacity building, environmental sustainability, and regional and international cooperation. The meeting, themed ‘Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific’, brought together 31 member countries and 19 affiliates from the region.
