KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s head coach, Pau Marti Vicente, has voiced concerns over the hurdles confronting his team as they commence their 2024 ASEAN Cup journey. The Harimau Malaya squad narrowly secured a 3-2 win against Timor-Leste at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, highlighting the obstacles they face, including injuries and club-related interference.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Vicente disclosed that three forwards-Darren Lok, Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad, and Fergus Tierney-are likely sidelined due to injuries. He also cited interference from clubs as a significant issue as the team prepares for their upcoming Group A match against reigning champions Thailand in Bangkok. “We need to see the reality at the moment,” Vicente stated, emphasizing the challenges players face with club commitments impacting national team focus.

The coach remains optimistic despite the setbacks, noting that Malaysia leads Group A with four points after two matches. The team is ahead of Thailand and Singapore, who have a gam
e in hand, while Cambodia and Timor-Leste trail behind.

Previously, players Mohamed Syamer Kutty Abba and Muhammad Adib Abdul Ra’op returned to their club, Penang FC, for a Challenge Cup match before rejoining the national team. Similarly, Declan Lambert and goalkeeper Kalamullah Al-Hafiz Mat Rowi joined the national squad after club duties post-Cambodia match.

As Malaysia prepares for the crucial encounter in Bangkok, Vicente did not disclose the number of players traveling, focusing instead on fielding the best possible squad. Malaysia, champions in 2010, has registered 26 players for this campaign, aiming to overcome the current challenges and maintain their lead in the group stage.
