Malaysia Engages in Diplomatic Talks with Iran Over Tanker Restrictions

Johor bahru: The government is in talks with the Iranian government to ensure that two Malaysian-owned tankers carrying fuel supplies are allowed to pass after exiting the Strait of Hormuz, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stated that despite clearance being granted earlier by the Iranian authorities, particularly by its president, the vessels are still facing restrictions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, one of the vessels has already reached Pengerang, Johor, while another is nearing Malaysian waters. However, two vessels that have successfully exited the Strait of Hormuz continue to encounter several restrictions. The Prime Minister mentioned ongoing negotiations to address the issue, emphasizing that prior approval had indeed been given.

Anwar addressed the media on the matter after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Bandar Permas Jaya. Accompanying him were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Pasir Gudang Member of Parliament Hassan Abdul Karim. Anwar also provided updates on other vessels, noting that one ship remains stranded in the Strait of Hormuz due to technical damage, preventing its departure for the time being.

Earlier reports highlighted that five Malaysian vessels had been stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amidst geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
