Malaysia: Malaysia Day 2026 celebrations on September 16 will be held as planned at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in Sarawak, although outdoor events have been canceled due to the concerning haze situation affecting Kuching and Serian.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Communications Minister and chairman of the 2026 National Day and Malaysia Day Celebrations (HKHM) Main Committee Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil announced the decision following an assessment of the haze conditions in both areas. Fahmi stated that the Cabinet acknowledged the haze situation, making outdoor activities unsuitable. The indoor celebrations will take place in the evening at BCCK.

Fahmi also mentioned that the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry reported that cloud seeding operations in Sarawak were currently unfeasible. The detected cloud formations and wind movements could potentially carry the clouds toward the South China Sea, preventing rain from falling in the necessary areas.

As of 8 am today, three areas in Sarawak reported hazardous Air Pollutant Index readings. The Serian District Police Headquarters recorded the highest reading at 320, followed by Kuching at 318 and Samarahan at 302.

Additionally, Fahmi conveyed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's appreciation for the successful organisation of the 2026 National Day celebrations held at Dataran Putrajaya. The event attracted over 100,000 attendees, with more than 10,000 participants in various performances and contingents. Fahmi noted that the programmes offered visitors a new and positive experience in conjunction with National Day.
