Kuala lumpur: The spirit of togetherness during the Malaysia Day celebration is emphasized to ensure that the appreciation for Malaysia's formation is not overshadowed by the National Day celebration. Malaysian Department of Information (JAPEN) Cyber Media Division Assistant Director Yokananthini Murugeesan highlighted the importance of celebrating both occasions with equal enthusiasm.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Yokananthini Murugeesan stated that while August 31 marks Malaya's independence, September 16 commemorates the formation of Malaysia in 1963, each date carrying different historical significance. She advocated for both to be celebrated with equal fervor, expressing this viewpoint during an appearance on the Malaysia Petang Ini program produced by Bernama TV.
She further explained that the Malaysia Day celebration is inclusive, extending beyond Sabah and Sarawak to other states. The celebration rotates among states, with last year's event held in Penang and this year's in Sarawak. Next year, it might be hosted in another state.
In preparation for the peak celebration on September 16, a series of cultural events have been scheduled, including pocket shows featuring Sarawakian tribal performances at Plaza Merdeka. Additionally, various cultural activities, such as silat performances and lion dances, are occurring across 10 divisions in Sarawak to symbolize unity among Malaysia's diverse society.
Yokananthini encouraged Malaysians to act as unity ambassadors by participating in the "One House, One Jalur Gemilang" initiative and producing patriotic content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The celebration will be broadcast live on RTM TV1, RTM Klik, and official digital channels, including Facebook pages of the Malaysian Department of Information and Merdeka 360.
The peak event at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on September 16 will feature performances by artists such as Faizal Tahir and Stacy, alongside a symbolic book-signing event to be archived at the National Archives of Malaysia, Sarawak Branch.
