Malaysia-China Partnership Advances TVET for High-Value Jobs

Tianjin:Malaysia's collaboration with China in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is set to equip thousands of Malaysians with skills for high-value employment in emerging technologies. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi highlighted this initiative at the World Vocational and Technical Education Development Conference 2026, emphasizing the importance of aligning skill development with industry needs.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the partnership has secured 5,125 training opportunities for 2024 and an additional 2,500 for 2026. It also includes the provision of training equipment, such as electric vehicles, for practical learning experiences. Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs Malaysia's National TVET Council, stated that the next phase of the country's TVET development would focus on high-end areas like artificial intelligence, robotics, and semiconductors.

Malaysia has seen significant growth in TVET participation, with a 33 percent increase between 2020 and 2025. By 2025, nearly 57 percent of school leavers opting to continue their studies chose TVET, contributing to a graduate employability rate of nearly 96 percent. Ahmad Zahid noted that the cooperation with China is crucial in turning increased participation into enhanced capabilities.

As part of the collaboration, Ahmad Zahid cited projects such as the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), where 208 Malaysians completed railway training in China this year. The Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park is also highlighted as a model where investment and talent development go hand in hand.

The Malaysia-China Industry-Education Alliance has announced initiatives worth approximately 49 million yuan, including 1,000 scholarships and 2,000 training opportunities. Additionally, the Malaysia-China Institute in Bagan Datuk is being developed to support up to 2,000 students in 18 priority fields with joint curricula and technology transfer.

Ahmad Zahid called for more Chinese enterprises in Malaysia to engage in these efforts through apprenticeships and career opportunities. He underscored that the partnership with China is transforming the lives of young Malaysians by creating real opportunities through education and training.
