Malaysia and Thailand Establish Flood Aid Distribution Mechanism

Songkhla:The Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla and Thai authorities have set up a mechanism to improve the distribution of flood relief aid to affected residents. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia's Consul General in Songkhla, Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi, explained that this initiative is part of the preparations to handle potential major floods, similar to the one in Hat Yai last November. Specific warehouses have been identified for storing relief supplies from Malaysia to ensure coordinated aid distribution. Ahmad Fahmi mentioned that once supplies from Malaysia arrive, they will be promptly transferred to these warehouses. An agreement with the Songkhla Governor's Office ensures that Thai authorities will distribute the supplies to those in need. If the Thai authorities lack sufficient manpower, Malaysian NGOs can step in to distribute supplies, with Thai support and guidance. Reflecting on last year's flood relief challenges, Ahmad Fahmi highlighted issues such as unclear distribution r esponsibilities and storage locations for the supplies in Hat Yai. This new mechanism aims to address these weaknesses. Furthermore, the consulate is coordinating with Malaysian agencies to facilitate assistance from Thailand during potential floods in Malaysia's northern states, as agreed with Thai authorities. During the previous major floods, about 7,000 Malaysians were rescued in southern Thailand. Ahmad Fahmi also advised Malaysians planning to travel to southern Thailand from now until January to monitor weather developments closely and postpone travel if there are signs of danger, such as rising water levels in local rivers. The consulate plans to issue frequent weather warnings via their website and social media platforms.
