Malaysia Airports Allocates RM11 Billion Capex for Nationwide Infrastructure Expansion

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has announced plans to allocate approximately RM11 billion in capital expenditure over the next five years. This significant investment is aimed at supporting the expansion and modernization of airport infrastructure across its network nationwide.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the announcement was made by MAHB's managing director, Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, who emphasized that the investment underscores the airport operator's long-term commitment to enhancing airport capacity, operational resilience, infrastructure modernization, and passenger growth. The allocation was revealed during MAHB's inaugural Procurement and Project Showcase, a new industry engagement platform designed to prepare the ecosystem for a pipeline of growing airport development projects.

"As airport infrastructure projects become larger and more complex, the industry ecosystem must evolve together with it," Mohd Izani stated. He highlighted that the platform aims to give contractors, suppliers, and partners clearer insights into future opportunities, encouraging them to prepare and scale their capabilities accordingly.

The showcase attracted a wide array of industry participants, including contractors, consultants, suppliers, specialists, and partners from the infrastructure delivery chain. The event was designed to foster collaboration, enhance market readiness, and improve long-term planning for upcoming airport projects. MAHB aims to build a more agile and well-coordinated ecosystem to support increasing airport capacity and infrastructure modernization nationwide.

The inaugural session focused on five strategic areas: capacity expansion and future growth, asset renewal and operational resilience, passenger experience and service optimization, smart airport and technology enablement, and sustainability and future-ready infrastructure. Notable projects under capacity expansion include the KL International Airport (KLIA) Development Plan, which aims to support passenger capacity growth beyond 100 million annually, the expansion of Penang International Airport from 6.5 million to 12 million passengers annually, and proposed upgrades at Kota Kinabalu International Airport to increase capacity from nine million to 12 million passengers annually.

Chief Development Officer Steven Andersen stressed the importance of delivery readiness and execution capabilities as airport projects continue to grow in scale and complexity. "Platforms like this allow us to engage the market earlier, encourage more meaningful partnerships, and create a stronger pipeline of specialized expertise," he added.

MAHB also recognized the support of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) of Malaysia in facilitating industry engagement initiatives aimed at bolstering local contractor participation and competitiveness within the infrastructure sector.
