Malaysia: Malaysia is aiming for the presidency of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Assembly for the 2026-2029 term, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He stated that the Cabinet had endorsed the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) to lead the country’s bid for the role.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga Kor Ming announced that on May 29, KPKT will represent Malaysia in Nairobi, Kenya, to contest for the UN-Habitat presidency, with hopes of raising the Jalur Gemilang on African soil. This statement was made during the KPKT 2024 Excellence Appreciation Ceremony.
Nga also mentioned that KPKT has been given the responsibility to make all necessary preparations to back the nation’s candidacy. UN-Habitat, under the United Nations General Assembly, focuses on promoting socially and environmentally sustainable urban development to ensure adequate housing for all.
Furthermore, Nga encouraged KPKT staff to enhance their knowledge and skills in line with technological advancements and global geopolitical shifts, consistent with the ministry’s people-centric mission. He emphasized the need for unity and commitment across all societal levels, adhering to the 4P (People, Public, Private Partnership) concept, to address global issues impacting governance and public well-being effectively.
Nga highlighted the importance of continuous improvements in good governance to meet public needs. During the ceremony, 411 KPKT staff from various agencies received the Excellent Service Award, which includes a RM1,000 incentive and a certificate. Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu and KPKT secretary-general Datuk M Noor Azman Taib were also present at the event.
