Bangkok:Malaysia The national sepak takraw squad of Malaysia, having achieved notable victories at the SEA Games, World Cup, and Asian Games, is now focused on claiming the prestigious Thai King's Cup, a title that has been elusive for them.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysian Sepaktakraw Federation (PSM) president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan has emphasized that winning the Thai King's Cup is a primary goal for the coming year. The team aims to secure at least one title in the team regu, regu, or quadrant events, with aspirations to possibly win in multiple categories.
Datuk Mohd Sumali highlighted that despite not having won the Thai King's Cup yet, Malaysia's victories over Thailand at the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok, especially in the men's team regu and regu events, have bolstered their confidence. These achievements demonstrate Malaysia's capability to overcome their longstanding rivals on Thailand's home ground.
The Malaysian national team showed remarkable performance at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, securing gold medals in the men's team regu and men's regu events. This success was carried forward to the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, where they won the men's team regu title.
Further triumph was achieved at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan, as Malaysia ended a 36-year wait by reclaiming the gold medal in the men's team regu event. The last time Malaysia won the Thai King's Cup was in 1988, in the team regu category.
In the current year's edition of the Thai King's Cup, the Malaysian squad, under the guidance of coach Ahmad Jais Baharun, finished as runners-up after a 0-2 defeat to Thailand in the final held in Bangkok in August.
