Malaysia Aims for More Gold at SEA Games Thailand 2025 After Historic T20 Cricket Win

Bangkok: Winning Malaysia's first-ever gold in the men's T20 cricket event has invigorated the national team's aspirations for more success at the SEA Games Thailand 2025, Virandeep Singh. Malaysia clinched the gold after triumphing in the single league-format competition, securing a six-wicket victory over Singapore in their final group match at Terdthai Cricket Ground. The team won all four matches, amassing a total of eight points.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, despite battling a headache, Virandeep, who significantly contributed with 65 runs, emphasized that the team's focus is now on clinching a second gold medal in the men's T10 event, which is set to commence on Monday. Speaking after the final, he expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I am glad that we managed to get over the line and won the gold medal for Malaysia."

Virandeep highlighted the importance of exposure to overseas leagues in enhancing his ability to manage nerves and perform under pressure, which he believes will benefit Malaysian cricket overall. Having played in leagues in Nepal, Canada, and the Cayman Islands, he acknowledged that these experiences have broadened his understanding of the game in varying conditions. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play with talented teammates and hoped for global recognition and opportunities for his fellow players.

Team manager Vijayalingam Vythilingam shared with Bernama that the team had performed exceptionally and worked diligently to earn the gold medal. Malaysia's unbeaten run began with a 114-run victory over the Philippines, followed by a seven-wicket win against Indonesia, an eight-wicket triumph over hosts Thailand, and concluded with the victory over Singapore.

The Philippines secured the silver medal, finishing second in the league standings, while Singapore, the 2017 champions, settled for bronze with four points. Malaysia previously earned the silver medal in the 2017 and 2023 SEA Games. The SEA Games Thailand 2025 are scheduled to take place from December 9 to 20 across Bangkok and Chonburi provinces.
