Kuala lumpur: Malaysia is taking significant strides in strengthening its stormwater management systems by integrating advanced technologies such as data analytics, predictive modelling, and artificial intelligence. Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad, emphasized the importance of these technologies in enhancing urban resilience and decision-making to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abdul Rahman shared these insights while representing Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof at the National Conference on Stormwater Management (SWaM) 2026. The four-day conference, which kicked off yesterday, serves as a collaborative platform for key stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and community members, to explore comprehensive solutions for stormwater management and urban development challenges.
The Deputy Minister highlighted the necessity of a holistic approach involving government, industry, and community participation in building resilient cities. He noted that the conference aims to contribute significantly to Malaysia's preparedness for future environmental challenges through shared ideas and collaborative efforts.
Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) Director-General Datuk Ir Mohamad Radzi Abdul Talib also outlined ongoing efforts to update technical standards and institutional capabilities. The department is reviewing the Urban Stormwater Management Manual (MSMA) to ensure effective stormwater management from the initial stages of land development. Mohamad Radzi emphasized the role of digital innovations like AI, Digital Twins, and predictive analytics in facilitating informed decision-making.
Additionally, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage is advancing its Eco-Friendly Drainage Master Plan (PISMA), with 38 studies completed and five more underway to enhance urban planning and investment nationwide.
The SWaM conference, themed "Inspired by Nature, Engineered for Resilience," is organized by DID and the Malaysian Stormwater Organisation (MSO), with support from the River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC) and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). The event has attracted nearly 400 participants, fostering knowledge exchange and professional networking in stormwater management.
The conference also saw the presentation of the inaugural Malaysia Stormwater Awards 2026 to honor former DID Deputy Director-General Datuk Ir Ahmad Fuad Embi for his significant contributions, marking a milestone in recognizing excellence in the field.
