Kuala lumpur: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has announced a proposal to provide comprehensive aid for a widow who recently lost her husband and is now raising five children aged between six and 15 alone. The proposed assistance includes support for living expenses, rent, and schooling.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the widow's family was one of three asnaf families visited by MAIWP at the Laksamana People's Housing Project (PPR) on Jalan Peel as part of the 'Asnaf Visitation Programme with the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) - Series 3 (2026/1448H)'. The programme aims to evaluate and address the needs of asnaf families, ensuring aid is tailored to their specific circumstances.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Datuk Dr Zulkifli Hasan emphasized the importance of understanding the real situations faced by aid recipients. He noted that MAIWP not only provides monthly financial support but also implements development programmes to help beneficiaries improve their living standards and gain self-reliance.
The widow's family had previously received General Schooling Aid from MAIWP, and the new proposal seeks to extend further assistance to help the family manage in the absence of their primary breadwinner.
The visitation programme also included a family with eight school-going children, where the father works as a driver for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and the mother is a homemaker. They receive monthly General Medical Assistance, including supplies for diapers, diabetic needs, a wheelchair, and schooling necessities.
Another family visited was that of a single mother, divorced since 2018, who is raising three school-going children. She receives monthly aid for living costs, basic needs, and schooling expenses.
As of August 12, 2026, MAIWP has allocated RM699.57 million in zakat funds through 38 assistance schemes, as well as providing support through asnaf development programmes and educational institutions under its management.
