Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is preparing to question former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob again this Wednesday in connection with an ongoing investigation into corruption and money laundering.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that Ismail Sabri is a suspect in the case. He explained that Ismail Sabri was initially issued a notice under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009 to declare his assets. The investigation intensified when financial assets linked to him were discovered, prompting the need for further clarification.
The MACC’s investigation is centered on the management and expenditure of funds meant for promotional and publicity purposes during Ismail Sabri’s tenure. Approximately RM170 million in foreign currencies, including the Thai Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc, and Yuan, has been seized. Additionally, 16 kg of pure gold bullion, valued at around RM7 million, was also confiscated.
Azam Baki stated that the commission has already recorded statements from 31 individuals and frozen 13 bank accounts, collectively holding approximately RM2 million. However, Ismail Sabri’s accounts and the Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia account remain unaffected at this stage. The investigation is being conducted under the provisions of the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
The investigation aims to identify all beneficiaries of the funds, focusing on corruption and abuse of power. The cash and gold bullion were found in three safes within a condominium, which is believed to have served as a ‘safe house’. The condominium unit was leased from an individual and may have been managed by one of the suspects involved.
As the investigation progresses, more witnesses are expected to be called in to provide statements, ensuring a comprehensive pursuit of justice in this high-profile case.
