Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has pledged to investigate all information linked to the case involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. This assurance was provided by the MACC’s chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, who confirmed that the investigation encompasses a range of serious issues including corrupt practices, power abuse, money laundering, and the discovery of cash and gold bars valued at RM177 million. Azam emphasized that the investigation is progressing smoothly and will continue as new issues arise.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azam stated that the MACC is committed to thoroughly investigating any new information that surfaces. He made these remarks to reporters after being appointed as an adjunct professor at Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) Accounting Research Institute. Azam highlighted that the ongoing investigation requires the recording of statements from Ismail Sabri, as there are several matters that need clarification. He noted that the investigation is not solely focused on issues related to the procurement and expenditure of funds for the Keluarga Malaysia initiative but also on new intelligence gathered, including the examination of asset declarations made by Ismail Sabri.
Furthermore, Azam mentioned that Ismail Sabri is required to address corruption allegations and other related issues to aid the investigation. The former prime minister spent nearly seven hours today at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya for a statement recording session, following similar six-hour sessions on both Thursday and Friday.
Previously, Ismail Sabri was categorized as a suspect after multiple witnesses provided statements concerning the discovery of nearly RM170 million in cash and 16 kilograms of gold bars during an MACC raid on a safe house. The case is currently being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
