Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will call up a ‘whistleblower’ to give a statement on a video linking a Sabah leader to a corruption scandal in the state. Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, stated that this step would facilitate an investigation into the leader based on new evidence obtained from the whistleblower’s statement.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azam emphasized that there is no issue of the MACC attempting to delay or protect any party involved in the case. “Our role is to investigate and not as a decision maker,” he affirmed during a media conference following the signing of a cooperation note between the MACC and the Kota Kinabalu mayor.
The signing was attended by Sabah MACC director Datuk S Karunanithy and Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah, who signed the note on behalf of the city council, with Azam witnessing the event.
Furthermore, Azam disclosed that the MACC had not yet taken a statement from the leader implicated in the video. He noted that the video, which has gone viral with allegations of corruption linked to a mineral mining project in the state, requires authentication to verify its legitimacy.
