MACC and Customs Department Propose Task Force to Enhance Port Monitoring

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) are proposing the establishment of a special task force to enhance enforcement and tax collection at strategic ports across the country.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the proposal was discussed during a courtesy visit by JKDM director-general Datuk Amran Ahmad to the MACC headquarters. During the meeting, both agencies shared insights on the challenges faced in executing their duties, particularly in customs inspection procedures and bureaucratic hurdles, as well as various domestic issues.

The one-hour meeting provided a platform for bilateral discussions on the roles and functions of JKDM, focusing on strategies to prevent leakages in container management under the department's jurisdiction nationwide. There were also discussions on syndicates' tactics to avoid tax payments, which include smuggling and falsification of documents.

JKDM highlighted a modus operandi involving false declarations of cash, where the declared amount brought into the country was significantly lower than the actual amount. MACC's involvement in promoting integrity through anti-corruption talks to JKDM personnel was also welcomed.

The meeting was attended by MACC Investigation Division senior director Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar and JKDM Integrity branch head Azian Umar.
