Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF), now known as Malaysia Athletics (MA), has firmly denied allegations of misappropriation of funds related to the Malaysian Athletics Awards Night held in January last year. MA president, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, stated that claims submitted by a Supreme Council member are still under review, and no payment has been made to date.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shahidan emphasized that a meeting will be convened to scrutinize the issue in detail. Appropriate actions will be taken if any wrongdoing is confirmed. Members of the Executive Council have expressed their dismay and disappointment over a council member’s recent media report alleging fund misuse.
The controversy revolves around a statement by Deputy President Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar, reported by several portals, which claimed there was misuse of funds. The allegations suggest that a council member submitted claims related to the Awards Night through his company, despite the MA receiving sponsorships.
Furthermore, Shahidan dismissed claims of postponing the annual general meeting (AGM) for selecting the national athletics governing body, which must occur before June 30. He assured that the AGM would still take place this year, with the date to be determined at the next Supreme Council meeting.
Shahidan clarified, “No decision was made (to postpone the AGM), I don’t know about the chats. If there is a decision, there will definitely be a statement from me.” He also mentioned that the Sports Commissioner’s Office (PJS) approved the amendment to the association’s constitution on January 15.
When questioned about his intentions to defend his position at the AGM, Shahidan indicated that an announcement would be made later. He expressed his willingness to step down should a more qualified candidate emerge to lead the National body.
Shahidan returned as President after defeating the then-incumbent, Datuk SM Muthu, in 2022, having previously held the position from 2006 to 2012. Among the reported constitutional amendments was the alteration of the leadership term from three years with a maximum of three terms to four years with a maximum of two terms.
