KUALA LUMPUR: The fertility and pregnancy treatment services provided by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) continue to achieve notable success rates, according to the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She highlighted that LPPKN’s fertility clinic has recorded a 21 percent pregnancy rate, with 6,249 individuals successfully becoming pregnant out of the 29,163 who underwent subfertility treatment from 1979 to October this year.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nancy emphasized that the success rate of LPPKN’s fertility treatments matches international standards set by the Fertility Registry of the United States of America, while strictly adhering to Islamic law principles by maintaining lineage without the use of donor sperm banks. For the current year, 200 pregnancies have been recorded. LPPKN receives up to 9,000 new and repeat cases annually, with a total of 42,941 new cases and 271,501 repeat cases recorded from 1979 to October 2024. T
hese initiatives have enabled many couples to have children, with some even achieving quadruplets in a single pregnancy through LPPKN’s treatments.
Nancy made these remarks during a press session after attending the LPPKN 2024’s Jalinan Kasih event and the opening of the LPPKN Full Paying Patient (FPP) Fertility Clinic. The event also saw the attendance of LPPKN chairman Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim and LPPKN director-general Abdul Shukur Abdullah. It aimed to celebrate families and children born through the board’s fertility treatments.
Nancy detailed that the LPPKN fertility clinic offers treatments such as timed intercourse, intrauterine insemination (IUI), gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT), in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The treatment costs range from RM1,000 to RM15,000 depending on the procedure, and LPPKN provided an IUI Subsidy Assistance Programme from 2020 to 2023 for eligible couples who had never been pregnant.
Additionally, she mentioned that c
ontributors to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) can withdraw from their Account 2 savings to finance fertility treatments. Nancy stressed the importance of advocacy alongside treatment, particularly for men, as they can also contribute to infertility due to health factors, urging both partners to be proactive.
Regarding the FPP clinic, Nancy noted that the service includes added value such as specialist doctors and the latest technology, catering specifically to couples with time constraints who are unable to access treatment at existing facilities. At the LPPKN FPP Fertility Clinic, clients can choose their preferred specialist and schedule appointments that align with their work commitments to undergo subfertility services.
