Kuala lumpur: The Labuan Port Authority (LPA) is optimistic that the marine services implemented by Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM) within the Labuan Port limits will operate smoothly, safely, and efficiently in accordance with international maritime standards. Its general manager, Mizool Amir Mat Drus, emphasized the importance of appointing an authorized operator equipped with the necessary experience, expertise, and skilled personnel.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the marine services are being implemented under the Operation, Facility and Management Continuation Agreement recently signed between MPM and LPA. Mizool stated that the port authority must ensure the operator possesses the dedication, capability, and commitment required to provide marine services within port limits. He expressed optimism that Megah Port Management would manage these services smoothly, benefiting port users and industry players. This was stated during a press conference following the launch of the Tugboats and Marine Services by Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd at the Dermaga Merdeka Jetty.
Mizool noted that LPA and MPM have been working closely to ensure all marine and maritime-related services at Labuan Port adhere to international maritime standards and relevant safety requirements. Close coordination between the port authority and the operator is crucial to ensuring vessel movements, towage operations, and other marine activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and without disruption.
He further highlighted that cooperation aims to ensure all related services operate smoothly and provide tangible benefits to port users, shipping companies, and other industry players within the port. MPM's acquisition of four tugboats valued at RM23 million demonstrates its strong commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities under the agreement. The investment in these assets reflects Megah Port Management's commitment to providing necessary facilities and operational capabilities to support marine services at Labuan Port.
The tugboats are expected to enhance the port's operational capacity, particularly in assisting vessels during berthing and unberthing, navigating within confined waters, and responding to maritime emergencies. Mizool stated that LPA would continue collaborating with MPM and relevant enforcement and maritime security agencies to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and international standards.
The launch also featured an emergency response demonstration showcasing the tugboats' firefighting support capabilities in the event of a maritime incident in Labuan waters.
