Low-Premium MHIT Plan and MA63 Discussions to Take Center Stage at Dewan Rakyat

Kuala lumpur: The Dewan Rakyat is set to deliberate on the introduction of a low-premium basic Medical and Health Insurance and Takaful (MHIT) plan, alongside discussions on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), as part of its agenda today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Order Paper on Parliament's website indicates that Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) will pose questions to the Finance Minister regarding the objectives of the MHIT plan, which offers premiums starting at RM80 per month. The inquiry will cover target groups and how the plan might reduce household medical expenses compared to existing insurance schemes.

In a related session, Datuk Matbali Musah (GRS-Sipitang) plans to question the Prime Minister on how the current administration's strategies regarding MA63 differ from those of previous governments. The discussion will focus on the anticipated direct benefits for the residents of Sabah and Sarawak.

Additionally, Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) will address the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister about the effectiveness of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme (eCOSS). The scheme's role in providing subsidised packet cooking oil to the elderly and rural poor without internet access will be scrutinized, alongside measures to prevent exclusion due to the application-based system.

The oral question session will also feature Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol) raising concerns with the Higher Education Minister about ensuring graduates possess genuine skills and are not overly reliant on artificial intelligence (AI). This follows insights from the Student Generative AI Survey 2025.

Furthermore, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH-Port Dickson) will seek the Prime Minister's input on both short- and long-term strategies to facilitate Tabung Haji depositors in performing the haj. This inquiry emerges amid apprehensions that financial and health issues are causing some to defer or reject haj offers for the 1446H season.

Following the question-and-answer segment, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with debates on the Motion of Thanks for the Royal Address. As per the Dewan Rakyat calendar, the current parliamentary session is scheduled to continue for 20 days, concluding on March 3.
