PENANG: Loong Air has commenced a new direct flight service linking Xi’an, China, to Penang, as announced at Penang International Airport today. This new route marks a significant expansion in the airline’s international operations and is expected to enhance tourism between the two regions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the launch of the Xi’an-Penang route is a result of extensive cooperation between Malaysia’s Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and the Transport Ministry. Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman, Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, highlighted that this strategic initiative is part of the broader efforts by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, following his official visit to China. The new flight is anticipated to open the northwest Chinese market to Penang’s tourism industry and offer travelers from the region the chance to experience the tropical allure of Southeast Asia.
In a ceremony celebrating the inaugural flight, Datuk Yeoh, alongside Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk P Manoharan and Ding Qiao, China’s Penang Vice Consul General, acknowledged the streamlined process for foreign airlines to obtain route approvals, facilitated by the collaboration with the MOT. This support is crucial for introducing new flights and expanding international connectivity.
Yeoh expressed gratitude to Loong Air, Xi’an Province, and all partners involved in establishing the new route. He emphasized its importance in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, aiming to maintain Malaysia’s status as a preferred tourist destination. The ongoing visa-free policy, extended by the Federal Government until December 2026, coupled with improved connectivity, is expected to significantly increase tourist arrivals and promote cultural exchange between Malaysia and China.
The new Xi’an-Penang route will be operated by Loong Air using an Airbus A320, offering flights twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays. The aircraft has a seating capacity of 168. Flight GJ8005 departs Xi’an at 1.30 pm local time and arrives in Penang at 7 pm, while the return flight, GJ8006, leaves Penang at 8 pm, reaching Xi’an at 12.50 am the next day. The flight duration from Xi’an to Penang is approximately five hours and 20 minutes, with the return leg taking about four hours and 50 minutes.
