Local Institutions Extend Buying Streak on Bursa Malaysia to Six Weeks with RM120.3 Million Inflow

Kuala lumpur: Local institutions extended their net buying streak on Bursa Malaysia to six consecutive weeks, recording net inflows of RM120.3 million last week, according to MBSB Investment Bank Bhd (MBSB IB).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MBSB IB's weekly Fund Flow Report for the week ended September 4, 2026, highlighted that the average daily trading volume experienced a broad-based decrease. Retailers saw a reduction of 10.8 percent, local institutions by 9.4 percent, and foreign institutions by 30.5 percent.

The report also mentioned that retailers have continued their net buying streak for two consecutive weeks, achieving RM520 million in net inflows. Conversely, foreign institutions experienced their fifth consecutive week of net selling on Bursa Malaysia, with RM640.3 million in net outflows recorded last week.

The trading week was shortened due to the market closure on Monday, August 31, in commemoration of Malaysia's National Day. Throughout the week, foreign institutions were net sellers during all five trading days. The highest outflows were observed on Tuesday, with RM488.4 million, followed by Thursday's RM74.6 million, Wednesday's RM56.8 million, and Friday's RM20.5 million.

The top three sectors that received net inflows from foreign institutions were plantation with RM138.2 million, transportation and logistics with RM81.4 million, and energy with RM40.3 million. However, the top three sectors that experienced net foreign outflows were financial services with RM462.9 million, technology with RM118.8 million, and utilities with RM106.8 million.

Across the eight Asian markets that MBSB IB monitors, foreign investors extended their net selling streak to two consecutive weeks, recording US$4.88 billion in net outflows last week. The net outflows were primarily driven by Taiwan, followed by South Korea, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Meanwhile, Indonesia and Thailand were the only markets to record net foreign inflows, although these were insufficient to counterbalance the region's overall net selling.
