Local Councils Urged To Play Key Role In Realising Sarawak’s 2030 Vision

Sarawak: Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has urged local councils and councillors to actively contribute toward realising the state’s vision of becoming a progressive, prosperous, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable state by 2030. Speaking to reporters after witnessing the swearing-in ceremony of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) councillors today, Dr Sim reminded both newly appointed and returning councillors to stay closely connected with the communities they represent.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Sim emphasized the importance of working diligently to achieve the 2030 vision, acknowledging that the journey would not be without challenges due to the diverse nature of the community. He encouraged outgoing councillors to remain engaged by supporting their successors and fostering strong community ties, highlighting the importance of continuity in community engagement.

Dr Sim further stressed the need for councillors to keep pace with the state’s rapid development, especially as Sarawak moves steadily toward its 2030 vision. He also discussed plans for relocating the current SMC office as part of the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project, scheduled to begin in the final quarter of this year. The new council building is expected to be situated within the redevelopment zone, potentially near the waterfront area.

Dr Sim expressed the significance of local councils having their own purpose-built premises, citing examples like the Miri City Council and Kuching South City Council (MBKS), where council complexes are integrated with public amenities. He highlighted the need for the SMC office to serve as more than just a place for bill payments, envisioning it as a public space that fosters community ownership and pride.
