Teluk Bahang:The Fisheries Development Authority Malaysia (LKIM) has readied approximately 1,600 metric tonnes of fish buffer stock to ensure a steady supply during the upcoming Northeast Monsoon, expected to start next month.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, LKIM Chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil emphasized the importance of these preparations, highlighting collaborations with private organizations through memoranda of understanding to maintain fish supplies in case of market shortages or delays. Additionally, more than 2,000 traders are involved in the imported fish trade to support supply continuity.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department had previously predicted three waves of rain during the Northeast Monsoon, which is expected to last until March next year, affecting the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia. The monsoon transition phase is set to conclude at the end of this month.
Muhammad Faiz noted that the fish buffer stocks are kept at LKIM complexes equipped with cold storage facilities. These stocks are managed by participating fishermen's associations and are replenished regularly to maintain freshness and quality. The National Fishermen's Association, along with associations in Kuala Kedah, Besut, Kemaman, and Kuantan, are among those involved in this initiative.
In addition, LKIM has allocated over RM2 million this year for the construction and repair of fish landing jetties to ensure they are functional for fishermen. Four jetties, each costing over RM500,000, are planned under this fund.
At a recent event, LKIM provided RM943,000 for various development programs benefiting the Teluk Bahang PNK community. This includes RM693,000 for living allowances from January to September, RM200,000 for infrastructure projects at the Teluk Bahang PNK agro-tourism center, and RM50,000 for the Teluk Bahang PNK B40 Fishermen's Productivity Enhancement program. Additionally, 31 members received assistance, including fishing equipment and supplies.
