Let Police Probe Negeri Sembilan MB’s Duress Claim – Azalina

Kuala lumpur: Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim's claim that he was forced to sign a proclamation seeking to remove the 11th Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan should be left to the police to investigate, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said emphasized. The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) stated that it would be inappropriate to comment further as the police have already opened an investigation paper to determine if duress or undue influence was involved in the signing process.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azalina expressed her confidence in the ability of Negeri Sembilan UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) to resolve the issue, given their understanding of the pertinent roles and relationships. She remarked on the importance of allowing the state executive council sufficient time and space to address the matter independently, without interference from the Federal Government or UMNO's central leadership.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that police had initiated an investigation into Ismail's claim of signing the Instrument of Proclamation under duress and against his will. On September 9, Ismail reiterated that the document, which has been widely circulated, had been signed contrary to his intentions.

In another development, Azalina mentioned that she would defer to Selangor UMNO regarding any action against a delegate from the state who allegedly made an inappropriate joke about a priest during the UMNO General Assembly 2026. She highlighted the sensitivity of religious issues and the potential for such analogies to be misconstrued, urging leaders to exercise caution in their remarks.
