Lawyers Caution Against Speculation in Zara Qairina Inquest Conclusion

Accra:The inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir has reached its conclusion with lawyers urging the public to refrain from speculation and to allow the judicial process to proceed without interference. Witness testimonies have concluded, signaling the end of this phase in the Coroner's Court.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Joan Goh, a lawyer representing one of the teenagers accused in the bullying case involving the Form One student, expressed hope that the evidence presented has been thoroughly addressed. She emphasized the importance of basing justice on evidence and law, rather than public opinion or speculation. Goh highlighted the tragedy's impact on all children involved and stressed the need to protect their rights and future.

Goh further urged respect for the legal process, emphasizing that the pursuit of justice for Zara should not compromise justice for others. She extended her thoughts to Zara's family during this difficult time.

On the other side, Shahlan Jufri, the lawyer for Zara Qairina's mother, mentioned that his team is preparing to address several issues in their written submissions, which are due by December 15. The coroner has requested assistance in identifying any discrepancies in witness testimonies and evidence, and feedback on school safety and investigation procedures.

Jufri's team is tasked with reviewing an extensive amount of documentation from the 96-day inquest before submitting their findings. The court is expected to deliver its decision on January 15 next year.

The Coroner's Court heard testimonies from 83 witnesses, including experts, children, teachers, and family members, since the inquest started on September 13 last year. The Attorney-General's Chambers had initiated the inquest following an investigation report and the exhumation of Zara's remains for a post-mortem in August 2025. Zara Qairina passed away on July 17, 2025, a day after being found unconscious at her school hostel.
