LABUAN: The staff quarters of the Labuan Royal Malaysian Customs Department at Bukit Kuda have been revitalized with a comprehensive RM3.19 million refurbishment, aimed at improving the living conditions for customs personnel and their families. The project, completed last month, included essential structural repairs and upgrades to various facilities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the refurbishment project, overseen by the Labuan Public Works Department (JKR) and directed by Ir Mohd Faizul Mohd Ali Hanapiah, commenced in July and reached completion by the end of November. The project encompassed a broad range of enhancements, including structural repairs, internal and external improvements, and upgrades to piping and sanitary systems. Additionally, improvements were made to street lighting and road access to ensure a safer environment.
Ir Mohd Faizul emphasized the project’s focus on creating a safer and more comfortable living environment for the staff of the Customs Department. He noted the collaborative effort of seven contractors, which allowed the project to be completed on schedule despite the challenges of working within an active residential area. The upgrades are expected to significantly improve the well-being of customs staff and their families, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for public service workers.
Residents of Bukit Kuda expressed gratitude for the improvements. Rahim Ali, a customs staff member, remarked on the long-overdue transformation, stating that the quarters now feel like a real home. Labuan Customs director, Aspalila Ag Tuah, echoed these sentiments, thanking those involved in the project and highlighting the importance of providing safe and comfortable living spaces for customs personnel.
Aspalila further noted that the refurbishment is part of broader government efforts to enhance public infrastructure in Labuan. It represents a significant step toward ensuring public service housing meets modern standards, benefiting residents and reinforcing morale and efficiency in service delivery. She also addressed the importance of improving housing conditions amid rising rental costs in Labuan, which allows customs personnel to enjoy better living conditions, reduce financial burdens, and enhance their quality of life.
