Labuan Corp Advisory Council Advocates for Establishment of Local CVLB Branch to Enhance Industry Efficiency

Labuan: The Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) has been urged to establish a branch here to facilitate dealings by transport and logistics companies operating on the island.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Labuan Corporation (LC) Advisory Council member Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong highlighted that the absence of a CVLB office in Labuan has long posed difficulties for industry players in handling matters related to commercial vehicle licences. Tiong pointed out that logistics and transport companies are often required to deal with CVLB offices outside Labuan, leading to unnecessary delays, additional costs, and administrative inconvenience.

Tiong emphasized that Labuan, being a federal territory since 1984 and under the federal government's administration, strongly needs a CVLB branch to support the local transport and logistics sector. He mentioned that the policy requiring at least 70 percent equity ownership by Sabahans should not be applied to Labuan-based companies, as Labuan's status as a federal territory warrants different regulatory requirements.

The absence of a CVLB branch may affect the participation of local companies in the transport and logistics industry, particularly those involved in commercial vehicle operations, port-related services, and cargo movement. Tiong asserted that while the policy might be suitable for Sabah, Labuan's distinctive status should be acknowledged in its regulatory framework.

As the managing director of Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd, Tiong noted that establishing a CVLB branch would support Labuan's growing role as a logistics, oil and gas, port, and transshipment hub. Efficient licensing services are crucial for smoother movement of goods, commercial vehicles, and port-related activities as Labuan continues to strengthen its economic position.

The Advisory Council has also approved the continuation of sea rubbish collection work, previously managed by LC. Tiong emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness of the island's waters, particularly around the town, port, ferry terminal, and tourism sites, to uphold Labuan's image as an island destination.

Sea cleanliness is vital not only for public health and environmental protection but also for enhancing Labuan's appeal to visitors. Tiong urged relevant agencies and industry players to collaborate in preparing Labuan for international cruise liners, ensuring readiness in cleanliness, port facilities, visitor handling, local attractions, transport services, and tourism support. The arrival of such liners is expected to provide economic benefits to Labuan, particularly for local traders, transport operators, tourism players, and service providers.
