BARCELONA: Malaysia will make history as the first Southeast Asian nation to host the Smart City Expo (SCE) in Kuala Lumpur from September 17 to 19, 2025. This event underscores Malaysia’s commitment to innovation and sustainable digital city development, positioning it as a leader within the ASEAN region. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo emphasized that hosting the expo marks a significant step for Malaysia in advancing its digital city technologies.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the preparations for the expo are well underway. The event aims to showcase advanced technology and provide a platform for global participants to engage in meaningful discussions about the future of urban life. The SCE Kuala Lumpur 2025 will offer Malaysia an opportunity to convene solutions and experts worldwide to focus on smart city development. Gobind Singh Deo announced these plans at the Malaysia Pavilion launch for the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 (SCEWC 2024).

g an award-winning 5G network, which supports the adoption of advanced technologies such as IoT-enabled smart buildings, advanced transportation systems, and sustainable energy solutions. Gobind is leading the Malaysian delegation to SCEWC 2024, accompanied by key figures from MyDigital Corporation, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), and Digital Nasional Bhd.
According to the minister, Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 will gather diverse stakeholders to explore digital and smart city development possibilities. The event will focus on key areas like IoT-equipped smart buildings, advanced transportation systems prioritizing connectivity, and sustainable energy solutions. Malaysia will host this event in conjunction with its ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, incorporating the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability: Building a Resilient Digital Society of Tomorrow.”
This year’s SCEWC will feature 11 Malaysian exhibitors showcasing projects integrating smart technologies into urban settings. These exhibitors
include Aerodyne Group, Agmo Holdings Bhd, Sonicboom Solutions Sdn Bhd, and others. Malaysia’s participation is driven by its ambition to be a key player in the cities of the future, with a focus on smart transportation, sustainable urban planning, and community-focused technologies.
The minister highlighted the opportunity to learn from global models like Saudi Arabia’s NEOM and Ukraine’s digital services development. The Malaysia Pavilion will display projects representing Malaysia’s commitment to smart city transformation, emphasizing the real-world impact of these technologies on community needs and quality of life.
SCEWC 2024 will take place from November 5 to 7, organized by Fira de Barcelona, with over 25,000 attendees, 1,146 exhibitors, and 600 speakers expected to discuss the future of urban development.
