Johor:Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has confirmed that a cargo train locomotive caught fire at Kilometer 4.75 along the Kempas Baru-Pasir Gudang route at approximately 1.10 pm today.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, locomotive M1004 was transporting cargo train No. 193 from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas to Pasir Gudang when the fire broke out. The train driver immediately stopped the train as a precautionary measure upon noticing the blaze.
The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) successfully extinguished the fire by 2.50 pm, and no injuries were reported. KTMB implemented safety measures at the site before allowing train movements to continue. The locomotive was later moved to the Kempas Baru Depot for technical inspection and damage assessment.
Further inspections will be coordinated with Berapit Mobility and the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) to determine the cause of the fire. The locomotive involved is part of KTMB's Rolling Stock Strategy (RSS), which includes 44 locomotives and 246 cargo wagons under a sale-and-leaseback arrangement aimed at enhancing the nation's freight rail operations.
KTMB stated that findings from the investigation will be reviewed to identify necessary preventive and improvement measures. The public has been advised against speculation, and further updates will be communicated as they become available.
Meanwhile, the Johor JBPM Operations Centre reported that a Fire Rescue Tender with seven personnel from the Tebrau Fire and Rescue Station responded to the incident after receiving an emergency call. The fire reportedly caused about five per cent damage to the locomotive.
