Moscow: The Kremlin has introduced a new strategy in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine by employing the relics of a 14th-century saint. Russian cadets were seen paying homage to these relics in a newly constructed Orthodox chapel, as depicted in a Defense Ministry video released on September 8. The chapel, located somewhere in the Novosibirsk region, is named after Dmitry Donskoi, a canonized warrior prince whose remains the Kremlin hopes will aid in reversing the course of the war. According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, Dmitry Donskoi's bones were recently exhumed from a Kremlin cathedral and have since been distributed to various locations across Russia. His right hand has been sent to the front lines for soldiers to venerate in hopes of gaining divine protection in battle. The relics have received significant media coverage, highlighting their symbolic importance in the conflict. Notably, billionaire Konstantin Malofeyev, who views the Ukraine invasion as a "holy war," has called the relics a "mira cle" that heralds potential victory. President Vladimir Putin, who has framed the war in religious terms, visited the cathedral where Donskoi's remains were kept shortly after they were unearthed. Despite a prolonged conflict that has resulted in significant casualties, the Kremlin has yet to achieve its initial objectives, including the overthrow of the Ukrainian government and the occupation of the Donbas region. Historically, Russia has utilized religious icons in battle, but the use of saints' relics is rare. The significance of Donskoi, who led a pivotal victory against Mongol forces in 1380, is deeply embedded in Russian history, making his relics a potent symbol. The Orthodox Church, led by Patriarch Kirill, has shown strong support for the war, framing it as a "holy war" against Western influences. The discovery of cracks in Donskoi's sarcophagus led to its opening, followed by a ceremonial unveiling with the Church's blessing. This move, celebrated by pro-war nationalists, aligns with a historical narrative, drawing parallels between the current conflict and past Russian military triumphs. The use of Donskoi's relics illustrates the intertwining of religion and patriotism in the Kremlin's war efforts, with the Orthodox Church playing a significant role in supporting state narratives. As the war continues, the Kremlin leverages historical and religious symbolism to bolster morale and legitimize its actions.
