KPKT Poised to Assist in Legalisation of Unpermitted Houses of Worship

Bercham: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), through local authorities, has expressed readiness to collaborate with all pertinent parties in executing a legalisation program for houses of worship constructed without official permission, as announced by Minister Nga Kor Ming.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga Kor Ming highlighted that while land-related issues fall under the jurisdiction of state governments, KPKT is prepared to assist in resolving these matters amicably. The ministry has established a Non-Islamic Houses of Worship (RIBI) Division to address these challenges. Nga made these remarks during the 'Sumbangan Kasih MADANI' event at SJKC Bercham.

Nga underscored the necessity for all houses of worship to adhere to legal requirements, specifically the acquisition of planning permits from local authorities. He emphasized that this regulation applies uniformly to all places of worship, including mosques, churches, and temples.

Nga acknowledged the existence of houses of worship built prior to the implementation of the Local Government Act or the National Land Code. Many of these structures have been in existence for centuries. He stressed the importance of finding legislative solutions that ensure these structures do not disrupt public order or interfere with infrastructure such as river reserves and traffic.

The statement follows remarks by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who reiterated that the government does not endorse the construction of houses of worship that fail to comply with established regulations and laws. The prime minister emphasized adherence to these regulations is crucial for maintaining national harmony and unity.
