The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), is spearheading the Sabah Intellectual Property Development Plan for 2026-2030. This initiative aims to establish a robust intellectual property protection framework in Sabah, enhancing the state's economy through innovation and intellectual property (IP).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali emphasized that the plan is aligned with the government's strategy to fortify an innovation-driven economy. The plan includes measures such as IP protection, valuation, IP-based financing, and expanding market access for local products via strategic branding specific to Sabah.
Armizan highlighted that a key focus of the plan would be to create an integrated intellectual property ecosystem. This includes identifying new Geographical Indications (GIs) for high-value products like highlan d agricultural produce, seaweed, and local handicrafts. This approach is designed to transform Sabah's biodiversity and cultural heritage into economic assets that benefit local communities.
The minister also noted that Malaysia had registered 130 GIs by April 2026, with 31 originating from Sabah. This places Sabah as a significant contributor to the national GI portfolio, with notable products including Sabah Tea, Tenom Coffee, Borneo Virgin Coconut Oil, Sabah Seaweed, Tawau Cocoa, Tambunan Ginger, and Sabah Batik.
In conjunction with the Intellectual Property Roadshow programme, Armizan described the initiative as a proactive measure to identify and harness the potential of local products. He stated that intellectual property ownership, encompassing GI protection, trademarks, patents, and copyrights, is critical for enhancing the competitiveness of local products globally and domestically.
Today's roadshow event focused on Sabah Tea in Ranau, a pioneer i n utilizing intellectual property tools in Sabah through GI acknowledgment. Armizan pointed out that GIs also generate a multiplier effect for local communities, boosting tourism and economic activities such as homestays, restaurants, transportation, and handicrafts in product-producing areas.
The KPDN, alongside MyIPO, remains committed to advancing the intellectual property development agenda, promoting grassroots economic growth, and unlocking the potential of products derived from Sabah's unique heritage and culture.
