Tokyo: Kioxia Corporation, a leader in memory solutions, has announced the commencement of shipping evaluation samples of embedded flash memory compatible with the UFS 5.0 standard, which is currently being standardized by JEDEC.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UFS 5.0 is a new standard for embedded flash storage developed by JEDEC to meet the performance needs of next-generation mobile devices, including high-end smartphones with on-device AI functions. It employs MIPI M-PHY version 6.0 for the physical layer and UniPro version 3.0 for the protocol. M-PHY version 6.0 introduces the HS-GEAR6 mode, theoretically supporting interface speeds of up to 46.6 Gbps per lane. With two lanes, UFS 5.0 can achieve approximately 10.8 GB/s in effective read/write performance.
The evaluation samples include a newly developed in-house controller for UFS 5.0 and Kioxia's 8th-generation BiCS FLASH. They are available in capacities of 512 GB and 1 TB. The package has a new design with dimensions of 7.5 x 13 mm, enhancing board space efficiency and design flexibility.
